Frequently asked questions

What should I do immediately after an incident?

Your safety and the safety of those around you are paramount. Make sure to prioritise the safety of people and property. Contact your insurance broker as soon as possible and take reasonable steps to minimise your loss. Record or photograph any damage, and avoid disposing of items until a loss adjuster has assessed them. Do not admit liability as this could prejudice your claim, and do not wait for quotes or documents before submitting your claim.

What documentation do I need to provide when making a claim?

You will need to provide detailed information about the incident, including any photographs or recordings of the damage. While quotes or documents to support your claim can be obtained later, submitting as much information as possible initially helps expedite the process. Your insurance broker will guide you on the necessary documentation and provide the required claim forms.

What is a 'policy excess' and how does it affect my claim?

A policy excess is the amount you are required to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in. It is essential to determine whether the excess applies to your claim. Sometimes, below-excess claims can develop into insurable losses and may need to be reported to your insurer as a material fact. Check your policy or discuss it with your account manager for clarity.

What happens after I submit a claim?

Once your claim is lodged, your insurer will often appoint a loss adjuster to investigate the circumstances of the event. The loss adjuster will assess the damage and determine the extent of the insurer’s liability. Always ask for identification and ensure they represent your insurer before providing any information regarding an incident.

Keep records of any business and personal expenses
